Old Fashioned basics

Old Fashioned cocktail on the rocks with a cherry and orange peel garnish

The original Old Fashioned is a cornerstone of cocktail history, celebrated for its simplicity and elegance. This traditional recipe includes just a few key ingredients: bourbon or rye whiskey, simple syrup (or a sugar cube), bitters, and an orange twist or cherry for garnish.

Method

  • Combine simple syrup and bitters: In an Old Fashioned glass, add your simple syrup and a few dashes of Angostura bitters. If you’re using a sugar cube, place the cube in the glass, douse it with the bitters, add a splash of water if desired, and muddle until dissolved.
  • Add the whiskey: Pour the bourbon or rye whiskey over a large ice cube
  • Stir and garnish: Stir gently to combine the flavors. Garnish with an orange twist or cherry, and enjoy the smooth, rich taste of a classic Old Fashioned.

Exploring Old Fashioned variations

The Old Fashioned is a very versatile cocktail, perfect for experimenting with different ingredients to create exciting new twists. Here are a few types of variations that can add a fresh spin to this classic drink.

Liquor swaps

Switch up the base liquor to create a whole new flavor. Use dark rum for a richer, sweeter drink, or tequila for a bold, agave twist. Brandy adds a smooth, fruity note, while Scotch whisky gives a complex, peaty depth. Each different liquor brings its own character to the party, making for a delightful variation on the classic.

Sweetener variations

Adding sweetness to an Old Fashioned is essential for balancing its bitterness and kick. Instead of simple syrup or a sugar cube, experiment with honey for a floral sweetness, maple syrup for a rich, earthy flavor, or agave syrup for a touch of natural sweetness. Flavored syrups, like cinnamon or vanilla, can also add an extra layer of complexity to your cocktail.

Bitters and other flavor enhancers

When it comes to choosing bitters for an Old Fashioned, there are countless varieties to explore. Swap out Angostura bitters for orange, chocolate, or coffee bitters, or add a few dashes of cardamom or lavender bitters for a fragrant twist.  Liqueurs like coffee or amaretto can also enhance the drink with additional depth and aroma.

Garnish options

Garnishes are more than just decoration; they add aroma and visual appeal to your cocktail. Think beyond the standard orange twist or cherry—try candied bacon for a savory-sweet element, a smoked orange peel for a hint of charred citrus, or edible flowers for a beautiful, delicate touch.

  • Play around with flavors and balance to make a killer Old Fashioned that’s just right for you. Start with the basic recipe, then mix things up by trying different spirits, sweeteners, and bitters.
  • Make sure the sweetness matches the bitterness and the strength of the alcohol. Don’t be shy to tweak the amounts until it tastes just right. Think about what you love: if you’re into smoky flavors, go for mezcal or Scotch whisky; if you’ve got a sweet tooth, add honey or maple syrup.
  • Use bitters and garnishes that match your favorite scents and tastes.

The best part about the Old Fashioned is its simplicity and versatility, so you can experiment endlessly to create a drink that’s perfect for you.

When to host Friendsgiving?

Choose a Friendsgiving date close to Thanksgiving, in the weeks leading up to or following the holiday. Check in with your friends to find a date that works for everyone, considering work schedules and travel plans.

Some folks opt for the weekend before Thanksgiving, so that everyone can still enjoy the holiday with their families. Ultimately, the best time is when it feels convenient and inclusive for your friend group to come together for a festive and memorable celebration.

What time should the event be?

Typically, it’s considered best to host a Friendsgiving event in the early evening to accommodate both lunch and dinner preferences. Starting around 16:00 or 17:00 strikes a balance. How long Friendsgiving lasts is totally up to you and your crew. Plan for a relaxed gathering with enough time to mingle, eat, drink, and play some games at leisure. Flexibility is key when figuring out what time to host your Friendsgiving party, so check in on your friend group’s preferences and schedule.

12. Crockpot Hot Chocolate

Two mugs of creamy Crockpot Hot Chocolate in front of a row of candles in a festive room decorated for the holidays

Sometimes all you need is to wrap your hands around a warm mug of hot chocolate, put on some fluffy socks, and cuddle up on the couch. This is when we like to whip up a batch of Crockpot Hot Chocolate.

In a microwave-safe bowl or cup, microwave one cup of milk to scalding (not boiling). This can also be done in a small saucepan on the stovetop. Gently whisk a quarter cup of cocoa powder into the milk. In a large slow cooker, combine a can of sweetened condensed milk, 6 cups of whole milk, 2 cups of heavy whipping cream, 2 teaspoons of vanilla extract, and 2 cups of semi-sweet chocolate chips. Finally, stir in the cocoa and milk mixture that you made first.

Cover and cook on low for about 2 hours, stirring often as it begins to warm up. This step is very important, as it ensures that the chocolate chips melt evenly and don’t clump at the bottom. Once all the chocolate is melted, ladle the mixture into mugs and top them with marshmallows, whipped cream, and a mini candy cane if you’re feeling a little extra.

How to make pumpkin purée for cocktails

Close up of a bowl of pumpkin puree in a home kitchen next to fresh slices of pumpkin

To get that rich, velvety texture and true fall flavor in your pumpkin cocktails, make your own pumpkin purée.

  1. Use fresh pumpkins. Look for sugar or pie pumpkins – they’re smaller, sweeter, and less watery than carving pumpkins. You’ll need one small pumpkin to make a batch of purée.
  2. Cut and roast. Preheat your oven to 375°F. Cut the pumpkin in half, remove the seeds, and place the halves cut-side down on a parchment-lined baking sheet. Roast for 45 to 60 minutes until the flesh is tender.
  3. Scoop and blend. Once cooled, scoop out the soft flesh, add a splash of water or apple cider, and blend it in a food processor until smooth.
  4. Spice it up. Add a sprinkle of cinnamon, nutmeg, or ginger if you want a little extra warmth.

BONUS TIP: Use any leftover pumpkin purée in baked goods, pancakes, or soups.

Interesting garnishes & presentation tips for pumpkin cocktails

Toasted marshmallow hot chocolate Christmas mocktails

Pumpkin cocktails deserve festive garnishes that make them pop on the table and in your feed. Here are a few ideas:

  • Cinnamon sticks and star anise: These fragrant spices double as stirrers and aromatic enhancers. They look striking in the glass and add a warm, inviting scent to every sip.
  • Toasted marshmallows: Skewer a lightly toasted marshmallow on the rim of your glass for that campfire-meets-s’mores vibe. This works perfectly for hot pumpkin cocktails like a Spiked Pumpkin Spice Hot Chocolate.
  • Edible gold glitter: Hosting a Halloween bash? Sprinkle some edible gold glitter on top for a magical, otherworldly glow.
  • Caramel drizzle: Add a drizzle of caramel sauce inside the glass or over whipped cream for a decadent, dessert-like finish.

Shareable presentation ideas

  • Serve your cocktails in mini pumpkins or hollowed-out gourds for instant wow-factor.
  • Create a “pumpkin patch” drink tray with cinnamon sticks, mini marshmallows, and fake cobwebs for extra Halloween flair.
  • Add personalized name tags or themed drink toppers for guests to snap and share.
  • Use dramatic lighting (like candles or fairy lights) to make the colors and glassware pop on camera.

Presentation is key, especially when it comes to Halloween. Use fun glassware, like copper mugs for Pumpkin Mules or tall hurricane glasses for punches, to make the drinks feel extra festive. And don’t forget the garnish; it’s the final flourish that makes the whole experience unforgettable.
