Think swaying palms, sea breezes, and the sweet zing of fruit juice on your tongue. While these colourful cocktails have deep roots in Caribbean, Polynesian, and tiki traditions, you don’t need a passport (or a beach bar) to enjoy them.

Whether you’re planning a poolside get-together, a balmy evening with friends, or just in the mood for something that feels like summer in a glass, we’ve rounded up a knockout list of tropical favourites—some timeless, others with a playful twist. Grab your shaker. It’s island time!

What makes a cocktail tropical?

Tropical cocktail recipes are bold, juicy, and designed to help you kick back and chill. The stars of the show? Exotic fruit juices like pineapple, lime, and mango. Add coconut in any form (cream, water, or milk) and you have a creamy, dreamy texture that screams vacation.

Many tropical cocktails owe a nod to tiki culture, a 20th-century celebration of island-inspired décor, music, and drinks. But while tiki bars were all about theatrical flair, modern tropical cocktails can be as simple or elaborate as you like. They’re made for lounging, laughing, and lingering on sultry summer days.

Essential ingredients for tropical cocktails

Flat lay of ingredients used to make the best tropical drinks including pineapple, coconut, limes, oranges and cherries

Tropical cocktails are often rum-based, though vodka, tequila, and even bittersweet liqueurs like Campari can also make an appearance. What sets them apart is their punchy flavour, vibrant colour, and sense of fun. If you want to whip up easy tropical drinks at home, it helps to have a few essentials on hand. Here’s what to stock up on:

  • Rum. This is the backbone of most tropical serves. Go for light rum when you want crispness, aged rum (like Appleton Estate) for deeper, more oaky notes, or overproof options (such as Wray & Nephew), when you want that extra kick.
  • Citrus juices. Lime is non-negotiable, but orange and lemon also bring freshness and balance. Always use freshly squeezed juice for the best result.
  • Tropical fruits. Pineapple, mango, and passion fruit bring natural sweetness and vibrant colour. Use them to make juice, purée, or muddle them straight into the drink for a burst of freshness.
  • Coconut. Cream of coconut imparts a velvety texture, while coconut water adds a lighter touch. Both pair beautifully with rum.
  • Sweeteners. Demerara syrup adds a rich, molasses-like base, while orgeat (an almond syrup) brings a nutty smoothness. Honey is also great for warm-weather drinks.
  • Liqueurs. Grand Marnier lends citrussy depth. And while the aperitivo classic Campari might seem out of place in a tropical drink, it works beautifully in cocktails like the Jungle Bird.

Tips for serving and presentation

Amazing Falernum cocktails for Tiki lovers to try at home

Looking for tropical drink ideas that wow your guests? Presentation is half the fun! These tips will help you nail the vibe:

  • Pick the right glassware. Match your drink to the vibe. Serve a Lime Daiquiri in a coupe to show off its crisp, elegant style. A Piña Colada or Blue Hawaiian looks great in a hurricane glass, made to hold those creamy, tropical layers. Reach for a tiki mug when pouring a Mai Tai; it’s all about the island flair. For the bold, bright Guava Vodka Spritz or Caribbean Mule, use a highball or Collins glass to let the colour and garnish shine. And when it’s frozen fun you’re after, like a Frozen Mango Margarita, a stemmed Margarita glass or even a sturdy tumbler will do the trick.
  • Turn up the garnish. Thread fruit onto skewers, freeze edible flowers in ice cubes, crown your drink with a pineapple frond, or go classic with a glazed cherry. It’s not just about looks; it also adds aroma and personality.
  • Serve it chilled. For tropical cocktails that are served on the rocks, we suggest using crushed or pebble ice. It cools the drink quickly and gives it that slushy taste, perfect for hot days.
  • Batch it up. Mixing for a crowd? Big-batch cocktails like Rum Punch or Piña Coladas are your best friends. Serve in a jug or punch bowl with a ladle and let the good times roll.
  • Go frozen. A blender, some fruit, and a splash of rum or tequila are all you need to whip up frozen versions of your favourites. Great for when you want to lean all the way into that tropical feeling.

Tropical cocktails aren’t just about what’s in the glass, they’re about the mood they create. Whether you’re sipping a Piña Colada on your terrace or shaking up a Rum Punch for a weekend get-together, it’s a moment to unwind, have fun, and feel like you’re on holiday, even if it’s just for the afternoon. A quick history of bourbon

A top view of bourbon being poured into an ice-filled glass, bowl of pretzels to the side

Bourbon whiskey has a rich history intertwined with American culture. Its roots trace back to the late 18th century, when settlers in Kentucky, influenced by their European distilling traditions, began producing whiskey from corn, a readily available grain in the region. The name “bourbon” likely originates from Bourbon County, Kentucky, though its exact naming history remains a little muddled.

In 1964, the American Congress declared bourbon as a distinct product of the United States, setting specific standards for its production. These include using at least 51% corn in the mash bill, ageing in new charred oak barrels, and distilling to no more than 160 proof (80% alcohol by volume). These regulations ensure consistency and quality across bourbon production.

It’s clear that bourbon has evolved from a local spirit to a global phenomenon, renowned for its smoothness, caramel sweetness, and complex flavours influenced by ageing in charred oak barrels. Its popularity continues to grow, with enthusiasts and collectors seeking rare and unique expressions from small batch and single barrel distilleries across the bourbon belt.

Rye vs Bourbon: The Difference Between Rye Whiskey & Bourbon

An easy bourbon tasting guide for beginners

A set of whiskey tasting glasses lined up on a rustic wooden table, each containing a different whiskey option for crafting the perfect Old Fashioned.

Tasting bourbon is an art that involves engaging multiple senses to fully appreciate its complexity and nuances.

  • Start by observing the colour, noting variations from pale gold to deep amber, which indicate aging and barrel influences.
  • Swirl the bourbon gently in a glass to release aromas, then bring it to your nose to detect notes of caramel, vanilla, oak, and spices.
  • When tasting, take a small sip and let it coat your palate, noting its texture and mouthfeel.
  • Identify flavours such as caramel, toffee, cinnamon, and nutmeg, while paying attention to any hints of smokiness or fruitiness.
  • Evaluate the finish—how long flavours linger on your palate and if there are any additional layers of complexity revealed.

Developing a palate for bourbon typically involves practice and exploration, comparing different brands and expressions to understand personal preferences and appreciate the craftsmanship behind each bottle. Whether enjoyed neat, on the rocks, or in cocktails, bourbon offers a diverse range of flavours and experiences for enthusiasts to savour and enjoy.

Best Vodka Lemonade Cocktails (2025) https://www.themixer.com/en-uk/trends/vodka-lemonade/ https://www.themixer.com/en-uk/trends/vodka-lemonade/#respond Mon, 02 Oct 2023 07:25:57 +0000 https://www.themixer.com/en-uk/?p=7104 If you’re on the lookout for the best vodka lemonade cocktails to serve up this season, we’ve got excellent news: The Mixer team has been hard at work finding the finest lemony libations around. Now all you need to do is choose your favourite, dress it up to suit your style, and get ready to be the host with the most.

How to make a basic home-made lemonade

Jug of homemade lemonade with fresh lemon slices

First things first – the best lemonade cocktails are always made with home-made lemonade. Happily, it’s also super easy to make. Here is our basic recipe:

Ingredients

  • 1 cup fresh-squeezed lemon juice (about 4-6 lemons)
  • 1 cup granulated sugar (adjust according to your sweetness preference)
  • 5 cups cold water
  • Ice cubes

Method

  1. In a small saucepan, combine 1 cup of water with the granulated sugar. Heat over medium heat, stirring occasionally until the sugar completely dissolves. Remove from the heat and let it cool. This is your sugar syrup.
  2. Squeeze the lemons to get 1 cup of fresh lemon juice. You can use a citrus juicer if you have one or just squeeze them by hand.
  3. Once you’re done, combine the lemon juice and sugar syrup in a large pitcher. Stir well to mix.
  4. Finally, pour 5 cups of cold water into the pitcher. Adjust the water amount based on your taste preference.

Once you have this basic recipe down, infusing your lemonade with other fruits, herbs, and aromatics is very easy. You simply add it to your pitcher of lemonade and allow it a few hours to infuse. If you prefer your lemonade without ‘bits’, it’s as simple as straining out the infused elements and serving it over fresh ice.

1. Basil Lemonade

Spiked Basil Lemonades in a brightly-lit kitchen

Flavoured vodka lemonades do not have to be overly sweet. Infusing homemade lemonade with basil is a delicious way to add a refreshing and aromatic twist to this classic drink. You can use about 1 cup of basil leaves for a standard-sized pitcher of lemonade. Wash and dry the leaves, and gently crush the basil leaves using a muddler or the back of a spoon to release its essential oils and flavour.

Place the muddled basil leaves directly into the pitcher of finished lemonade. Stir the lemonade thoroughly to combine the basil flavour. You can use a long spoon or stir stick to make sure the basil is evenly distributed. Allow the lemonade to chill in the refrigerator for at least 30 minutes to an hour. This helps the basil flavours meld with the lemonade.

If you prefer a smoother lemonade without bits of basil leaves, you can strain the mixture before serving. Use a fine-mesh strainer or cheesecloth to remove the basil leaves. This method allows you to add basil to your lemonade without the need for additional sweeteners. Adjust the quantity of basil based on your preference for a subtle or more pronounced basil flavour.

The Best Soju Cocktails to Shake Up Your Drinks Game https://www.themixer.com/en-uk/trends/soju-cocktails/ https://www.themixer.com/en-uk/trends/soju-cocktails/#respond Thu, 29 Jun 2023 09:55:12 +0000 https://www.themixer.com/en-uk/?p=6327 Light, smooth, and endlessly versatile, soju is a beloved Korean distilled spirit that’s quickly making waves in the cocktail world. With its mild flavour and lower ABV, it blends effortlessly into a variety of drinks, from crisp highballs to fruit-forward spritzers. Once a staple of Korean drinking culture, soju cocktails are now gaining global popularity, popping up in trendy bars and at-home mixology sessions alike. Ready to shake things up? Let’s explore the best soju cocktails to mix and enjoy at home.

What is soju and why is it so popular?

Two sipping glasses of clear spirit on a table next to a bottle of Korean spirit set on a table filled with Korean food

Soju is a clear distilled spirit that originated in Korea and has gained immense popularity worldwide.

It is typically made from fermented grains, such as rice, wheat, or barley, though modern variations may include other ingredients like sweet potatoes or tapioca. Known for its smooth and clean taste, it has an alcohol content ranging from 16% to 45%, making it a versatile base for a wide array of cocktails.

In fact, one of the important reasons behind soju’s immense popularity is its ability to blend seamlessly with various tastes, allowing mixologists and DIY enthusiasts to create innovative and enticing cocktails. It has a neutral profile that serves as a perfect canvas for incorporating fruits, herbs, and other exciting ingredients, resulting in unique mixed drinks.

Pro tip! If you plan on serving soju cocktails at a party, but want to be prepared to offer less-adventurous clinkers an alternative base spirit, keep a bottle of SKYY Vodka handy. Vodka and soju both have a clear, well-balanced flavour, so it is easy to swap one for the other. You could also push out the boat by offering a flavoured vodka like SKYY Infusions Blood Orange if you want to lean into a more zesty vibe.

The social aspect of soju also plays a significant role in its popularity. In Korean culture, soju is often enjoyed with friends and family, creating a social atmosphere, and fostering connections. The tradition of “pouring for others” adds a communal and interactive element to the drinking experience, making the spirit an integral part of gatherings and celebrations.

Essential ingredients for soju cocktails

Wondering what to mix with soju? The good news is that the spirit’s smooth, mild profile makes it an incredibly adaptable base for all sorts of sensational sips. While classic plain soju is always a solid choice, flavoured soju, like grapefruit or peach, adds an extra dimension to fruit-forward drinks. For a richer texture, Yakult or coconut milk can bring a creamy contrast, while green tea or herbal infusions offer a more delicate, earthy balance.

When it comes to flavour pairings, soju shines alongside citrus fruits like lemon, lime, and orange, which brighten up its subtle character. Tropical ingredients such as mango, pineapple, and watermelon add a lush, sun-kissed sweetness, while fresh berries (especially strawberry and raspberry) enhance its natural crispness. If you prefer a more sophisticated twist, soju also blends wonderfully with floral and herbal elements like mint, cucumber, and green tea.

For serving, the right glassware and garnishes can elevate any soju cocktail. Highballs and Collins glasses are great for long, fizzy drinks, while coupes and martini glasses suit elegant, stirred creations. Mules, served in copper mugs, bring an extra chill factor, and traditional shot glasses are essential for Korean-style soju bombs.

Garnish options range from lime wedges and citrus twists to fresh herbs, fruit slices, and even fun elements like popsicles for a playful, eye-catching finish.

Tips for making the best soju cocktails

A bartender, dressed in black, presents a tall glass filled with an ice-cold yuzu cocktail. The blurred background of a bar with golden lighting creates a stylish, inviting atmosphere.

Soju’s light, smooth profile makes it ideal for mixing, but achieving the perfect balance can elevate your cocktails to new heights. Here’s how to fine-tune the flavours for the perfect sip:

Too sweet? Add a splash of freshly squeezed lime or grapefruit juice to cut through the sweetness. A few dashes of bitters—like orange or aromatic—can also tone things down without making the drink too tart.

Too flat? A splash of soda water or tonic can liven things up with a bit of effervescence. If the flavours feel muted, a pinch of sea salt or a citrus zest garnish can help sharpen the drink’s profile.

Need a little body? A drizzle of honey, Yakult, or coconut milk can add richness, while muddled berries or melon bring texture and depth. If you want a silkier mouthfeel, shake the cocktail well to incorporate air and create a smoother sip.

Serving suggestions and food pairings

A plate of sushi with wasabi and soya sauce

Soju cocktails make an excellent companion for various tasty dishes. Whether you’re enjoying a bright, fruity cocktail or a creamy, indulgent mix, here’s how to pair it perfectly:

Canapés: Soju cocktails pair very well with Korean fried chicken, tempura, and crispy spring rolls; the light flavours cut through rich, crunchy textures. For a more delicate start, fresh sushi, sashimi, or summer rolls bring out soju’s subtle smoothness.

Mains: Bold, flavourful mains like Korean BBQ, grilled seafood, and spicy noodle dishes match well with fruity or citrus-based soju cocktails, balancing heat with sweetness. If you prefer something heartier, try pairing creamy soju drinks with ramen or bibimbap, where the richness plays well against umami flavours.

Desserts: For a sweet finish, fruity soju cocktails shine alongside mochi, fruit tarts, or shaved ice desserts like bingsu. Creamier, yogurt-based soju mixed drinks can be served with cheesecake, panna cotta, or coconut-based treats, for a smooth, indulgent contrast.

Insider tips from our cocktail expert

A headshot of Tris Fini from Campari Academy UK

We sat down with Tristram Fini from Campari Academy in the UK to chat about all things rum, and these are the insights we gained. Tris is an Australian mixologist from Perth who began his career at Campari Australia before joining Campari UK in 2022. Known for his expertise and passion for cocktails, this drinks maestro offers unique insights to elevate your mixology game, whether you’re a seasoned pro or a beginner looking to make your first classy clinker.

“To take your rum cocktails to the next level, always use freshly squeezed citrus.”

Whether it’s lime for a classic Cuba Libre or lemon for a dapper twist, using fresh citrus juice enhances the depth and brightness of your drink. It’s a simple but effective way to ensure each sip is bursting with flavour.

How to balance the flavour of rum in cocktails

Miami Vice Cocktail with beach in the background

Achieving balanced flavours in rum cocktails involves understanding the cocktail’s style and purpose. Whether crafting a robust Old Fashioned or a creamy Piña Colada variant like the Miami Vice, the key lies in selecting complementary elements. For stirred drinks, focus on choosing the right sweetener and bitters to enhance the rum’s profile. For tropical drinks, balance rum’s richness with brightness and acidity to create a harmonious blend, ensuring each flavour component supports the overall taste experience.

“Always consider the style and intention of your cocktail. Whether aiming for a classic, spirit-forward drink or a tropical, creamy clinker, balance is achieved by choosing ingredients that harmonise and enhance each other’s flavours.”

Three mistakes to avoid when making rum cocktails

When making rum cocktails, here are some common mistakes to avoid:

  1. Not experimenting: A significant mistake is sticking to familiar drinks and not trying new variations. Experimenting with different ingredients and recipes can enhance your cocktail-making skills and enjoyment.
  2. Lack of quality resources: Another mistake is not investing in good quality cocktail books. Historical books, like those by Jerry Thomas, provide a foundation but modern resources such as Gary Regan’s The Joy of Mixology and The Cocktail Codex by Death & Co. offer updated and practical guidance for contemporary ingredients and techniques.
  3. Disregarding ingredient evolution: Modern ingredients have evolved significantly from those used in the 1880s. Understanding the differences in citrus styles, juices, and sweeteners can dramatically impact the quality of your cocktails.
“Don’t be afraid to experiment and try new things.”

Experimentation, informed by great resources like modern cocktail books, is key to making outstanding rum cocktails at home.

Food pairings for rum cocktails

Close up of a serving platter of deep-fried, breaded chicken wings drizzled in Boozy Hot Sauce

Pairing rum cocktails with food can be approached in two main ways: by considering the origins of both the food and the drink or by focusing on the flavour profiles of the spirits.

“When pairing rum cocktails with food, think about the flavours and origins of both the drink and the dish.”

Regional pairings often make for natural matches, while focusing on specific flavour profiles can lead to exciting and complementary combinations.

  • Regional pairing

One effective method is to pair foods and drinks from the same region, leveraging the natural harmony of local flavours. For example, Jamaican rum punch pairs excellently with jerk chicken. The fruity, sweet, and sour elements of the rum punch complement the spicy, citrus-driven, and herbaceous notes of the jerk chicken, especially with the intense heat of Scotch bonnet chilies. The tropical notes of the rum, such as pineapple, coconut, and papaya, blend seamlessly with the robust flavours of an island-style dish.

  • Flavour profile pairing

Another approach involves pairing food with cocktails based on their flavour profiles, especially with spirits-forward drinks. An Appleton Estate 12-year-old Rum Old Fashioned, with its rich coffee, chocolate, molasses, and caramel notes, pairs beautifully with desserts like tiramisu or dark chocolate treats. This cocktail’s flavours, including orange, vanilla, toffee, and fudge, are enhanced when paired with complementary foods such as Terry’s chocolate oranges, reinforcing the spirit’s inherent notes.

Sugar syrups are easy to make and add sweetness and flavour to your rum cocktails. Here are a few recipes to get you started:

  • Vanilla bean sugar syrup

Ingredients

  • 1 cup of water
  • 1 cup of granulated sugar
  • 1 vanilla bean, split lengthwise

  1. Combine water and sugar in a saucepan. Heat over medium heat, stirring until the sugar dissolves.
  2. Add the split vanilla bean to the saucepan and simmer for 10 minutes.
  3. Remove from heat and let the syrup cool to room temperature.
  4. Remove the vanilla bean and transfer the syrup to a clean jar or bottle.
  • Cinnamon sugar syrup

Ingredients

  • 1 cup of water
  • 1 cup of granulated sugar
  • 2-3 cinnamon sticks

Method

  1. Combine water and sugar in a saucepan. Heat over medium heat, stirring until the sugar dissolves.
  2. Add cinnamon sticks and simmer for 10 minutes.
  3. Remove from heat and let the syrup cool to room temperature.
  4. Remove cinnamon sticks and transfer the syrup to a clean jar or bottle.

2. Fresh fruit juices

Use seasonal produce in cocktails

Freshly squeezed fruit juices can elevate rum cocktails with vibrant, natural flavours. Here’s how to make some of the best:

  • Lime juice

  1. Roll limes on the countertop to soften them.
  2. Cut and squeeze the juice using a citrus juicer.
  3. Strain out the pulp if desired.
  • Lemon juice

Follow the same steps as for lime juice, substituting lemons.

  • Mixed berry juice

  1. Combine strawberries, blueberries, and raspberries in a blender.
  2. Blend until smooth, then strain through a fine mesh sieve to remove seeds and pulp.

3. Herbal infusions

Infusing water with herbs can add a unique twist to your rum cocktails.

Method

  1. Add a handful of fresh herbs (e.g. mint leaves, basil, or rosemary) to a jug of water.
  2. Let it steep in the refrigerator for a few hours or overnight. Remove the herbs, and use the water in your mixed drinks.
