A row of four green, yellow and red Squashed Frog cocktails

Frogs have a bit of a bad reputation for being gross, and we feel kinda bad for them. But not bad enough to leave them out of some Halloween fun. If you’re planning a Halloween party, we have the Squashed Frog Cocktail ingredients you need for a bit of trick and treat fun.

Contrary to its name, you won’t be eating frogs (yeah, we’re looking at you, France). Instead, you’ll be creating a totally kissable frog. Made with just three ingredients, the recipe is easy to dissect. You’ll need melon liqueur, Advocaat (a liqueur made with brandy, egg yolks, and sugar), grenadine, a shot glass, and good friends.

QUICK TIPS

01

Refrigerate ingredients before pouring the shots.

02

No grenadine? Make your own by combining 2 parts simple syrup with 1 part pomegranate juice.

03

If you don’t have Advocaat go ahead and use Irish cream instead.

Squashed Frog Cocktail recipe

Here’s a random frog fact! Apparently, frogs shed their skin once a week. Which is fine. Nice even. Shiny, new nice frog skin. What frog wouldn’t want a weekly makeover? But here’s the plot twist: after they’ve shed the old skin, they eat it. And this is why the Squashed Frog deserves to be featured on our list of harrowing Halloween cocktails. Because that’s just creepy.

We’re happy to report that the frog cocktail ingredients are skin-free. In fact, this shot is downright delicious. The Advocaat tastes like brandy custard cream and balances perfectly with the sweetness of the melon liqueur. The grenadine gives this Squashed Frog a slightly tart fruity finish.

Strength-wise, it comes in at around 18% ABV, making it just potent enough to have more than one. But as the Italians say: “even a frog would bite if it had teeth.” So handle it with care.

How to serve the Squashed Frog Cocktail

For the best gory results, serve the Squashed Frog in a clear shot glass. Add the grenadine last—visually this represents the frog’s blood.  We love serving this shot on occasions like Halloween, St Patrick’s Day, and 90s parties

Squashed Frog recipe variations

Add some Irish cream for a different (and slightly more gory-looking) variation of the Squashed Frog shot. For this, you’ll need equal parts of each liquor, followed by a splash of grenadine.
