Best Chocolate Martini recipe

The Chocolate Martini is a shaken cocktail, whose recipe only requires three ingredients in a 1:1:1 ratio. Easy to prepare, but hard to resist, this cocktail is perfect when you’re short on time and want to leave your guests with a bang.

Crème de Cacao vs Chocolate Liqueur

Both utterly delicious but very different, a Crème de Cacao is a flavoured liqueur made from cacao beans with vanilla notes while a chocolate liqueur is more of a syrup, much sweeter and often used as a sweet chocolate hit in coffee drinks or mocha Martinis.

Where does this cocktail come from?

The Chocolate Martini is a Martini in name only, much like the Pornstar Martini and the Espresso Martini, but is nonetheless delicious. It’s said that it was invented by two actors, Rock Hudson and Elizabeth Taylor, who both had a passion for chocolate and the Martini. One night while filming Giant in 1955, they decided to add chocolate liqueur and syrup to a Vodka Martini. Hence the Chocolate Martini was born, and it’s been a staple dessert cocktail ever since.

When is the best time to enjoy a Chocolate Martini ?

Chocolate martinis are the epitome of after-dinner cocktails, as they make a perfect dessert. They can be adapted to anyone’s taste, for example using white chocolate liqueur for a milk chocolate version.

Chocolate Martinis are also Valentine’s Day favorites, alongside Champagne and berry cocktails. The richness and warmth of chocolate also make this drink one of the best Christmas cocktails to enjoy during the festive season.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

Follow our clever trick of dipping the glass in chocolate liqueur, then in cocoa power. For a more decadent chocolate hit, melt your favourite chocolate, paint it around the rim (a few drips are allowed) or dip your glass in it before dipping it into cocoa powder.

For a less boozy Chocolate Martini, you could use a chocolate syrup instead, just add slowly as the sweetness may vary. Add a coffee liqueur if you’re partial to coffee kick.

A Chocolate Martini always has a vodka base with chocolate liqueur. It’s sometimes poured with an Irish cream but we prefer the chocolate boost a Crème de Cacao brings to this delicious cocktail.

Why not? We’ve not tried this combination, it would thin your martini somewhat, but give it a try if you’re a fan of chocolate milk. You’ll love it.
