From whisky-vs-whiskey spelling drama to beginner-friendly bottles, easy hosting ideas, and five classic cocktails that always deliver,\u00a0here\u2019s\u00a0how to make the most of the day without turning it into a lecture.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

What is World\u00a0Whiskey\u00a0Day?<\/h2>\n

Founded in 2012 by Blair Bowman while studying at the University of Aberdeen, World\u00a0Whiskey\u00a0Day is\u00a0<\/span>a global celebration of\u00a0whiskey\u00a0<\/span><\/b>in all its forms<\/span>, which invites everyone to try a\u00a0dram\u00a0and celebrate the water of life.<\/span><\/p>\n

But\u00a0<\/span>when is World\u00a0Whiskey\u00a0Day<\/span><\/b>? It lands on the third Saturday of May every year, which means\u00a0<\/span>in 2026 it falls on 16 May<\/span><\/b>. And the celebrations keep getting bigger, with tastings, parties, and\u00a0whiskey-fueled\u00a0gatherings\u00a0showing up\u00a0far beyond the usual suspects (Scots,\u00a0we\u2019re\u00a0talking to you). In fact, World\u00a0Whiskey\u00a0Day has been marked in\u00a0<\/span>places you might not instantly associate with\u00a0whiskey\u00a0at all<\/span><\/b>, from Brazil to Bali to Cambodia. One year, the celebration even reached Antarctica, where researchers at Australian Antarctic Division stations held\u00a0whiskey\u00a0tastings of their own \u2014 a long way to go for a dram if you ask us, but honestly, fair enough.<\/span><\/p>\n

World\u00a0Whiskey\u00a0Day also has a close cousin,\u00a0<\/span>International Whiskey Day<\/span><\/b>, celebrated on 27 March. Born a bit earlier, in 2008, it was created in honor of British whiskey writer Michael Jackson by a group of fellow writers and is celebrated on his birthday. More famous in Europe than in the US,\u00a0it\u2019s\u00a0also celebrated with plenty of enthusiasm by whiskey lovers around the world.<\/span><\/p>\n

So, what made\u00a0whiskey\u00a0such a\u00a0center\u00a0of attention even beyond its traditional heartlands? Part of it is the\u00a0<\/span>sheer range of styles<\/span>, from smoky Scotch to smooth Irish whiskey to bold bourbon, and part of it is that\u00a0whiskey\u00a0culture has become far more\u00a0<\/span>global,\u00a0curious\u00a0and relaxed<\/span>\u00a0than the old clich\u00e9s suggest. Think less water droppers, more\u00a0<\/span>bourbon cocktails<\/span><\/b>. World\u00a0Whiskey\u00a0Day leans right into that shift, with a simple idea at its core: all you need is a bottle of\u00a0whiskey\u00a0(or whisky), however you enjoy it.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Whiskey vs.\u00a0whisky:\u00a0a\u00a0difference you\u00a0should\u00a0know<\/h2>\n

We\u2019ve all heard the debate sooner or later: whisky or whiskey?\u00a0The short answer is simple. Scotland, Canada, and Japan usually spell it whisky, while Ireland and the United States usually go with whiskey. That tiny \u201ce\u201d has caused an impressive amount of drama over the years \u2014 friendships tested, opinions launched, and probably at least one\u00a0portion\u00a0of haggis withheld. Jokes aside, people really do care about the\u00a0whisky vs. whiskey<\/strong>\u00a0difference, and not just because of spelling.<\/span><\/p>\n

In 2008, New York Times wine critic Eric Asimov was flooded with angry emails from Scottish readers for spelling it wrong. No one is safe. And to look at the root of this whiskey-or-whisky difference, we need to go back to its Gaelic origin: \u201cuisce\u00a0beatha\u201d, or \u201c<\/span>water of life<\/span><\/b>\u201d, a term shared across Irish and Scottish traditions, even if the Scottish Gaelic spelling is usually rendered as \u201cuisge\u00a0beatha\u201d. Similar sound,\u00a0different way\u00a0of writing the end of the modern word: an \u201cey\u201d for the Irish (and later the Americans too, mostly because of Irish immigration in the 18th and 19th centuries), and just a \u201cy\u201d for the Scots (plus pretty much everyone else). Little memory trick?\u00a0<\/span>Countries with an \u201ce\u201d in the name\u00a0<\/span><\/b>tend to use the \u201ce\u201d,\u00a0while\u00a0<\/span>countries without one\u00a0<\/span><\/b>usually do not. That might save you one day. You\u2019re welcome.<\/span><\/p>\n

But are people getting their feathers so ruffled over just an \u201ce\u201d? Not exactly. The difference between whiskey and whisky has plenty to do with\u00a0<\/span>the content of the bottle, not just the word on its label<\/span><\/b>. To be officially called Scotch whisky, the spirit needs to be produced and matured in Scotland, matured in oak casks, and aged for at least three years. Plus, single malt Scotch whisky must be made from 100% malted barley at a single distillery. Irish whiskey, on the other hand, usually uses little or no peat, so\u00a0there\u2019s\u00a0generally less\u00a0smokiness in the glass. It can be made with malted and\u00a0unmalted\u00a0barley, and while\u00a0it\u2019s\u00a0often triple distilled,\u00a0that\u2019s\u00a0not a hard rule across the board. Like Scotch whisky, Irish whiskey must also be matured for a legal minimum of three years.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Now that you know enough about the difference an \u201ce\u201d can make,\u00a0let\u2019s\u00a0throw in the whole alphabet. There are many more\u00a0<\/span>types of whiskey<\/span><\/b><\/a>\u00a0than you might imagine, and that\u2019s exactly where things start to get interesting. They can seem like a lot at first, but once you get a handle on the main whiskey categories, the whole bourbon-vs-rye-vs-scotch puzzle gets a lot less smoky \u2014 pun very much intended.<\/span><\/p>\n
