What\u00a0is World\u00a0Whiskey\u00a0Day?<\/h2>\n

Founded\u00a0in 2012 by Blair Bowman while studying\u00a0at the University of Aberdeen, World\u00a0Whiskey\u00a0Day\u00a0is\u00a0<\/span>a global celebration of\u00a0whiskey\u00a0<\/span><\/b>in all\u00a0its forms, which\u00a0invites everyone to try a\u00a0dram\u00a0and celebrate the water of life.<\/span><\/p>\n

But\u00a0<\/span>when\u00a0is World\u00a0Whiskey\u00a0Day<\/span><\/b>?\u00a0It lands on the third Saturday of May every year, which means\u00a0<\/span>in 2026\u00a0it falls on 16 May<\/span><\/b>. And the celebrations keep getting\u00a0bigger, with tastings, parties, and\u00a0whiskey-fuelled\u00a0gatherings\u00a0showing\u00a0up\u00a0far beyond the usual suspects (Scots,\u00a0we\u2019re\u00a0talking\u00a0to you).\u00a0In fact, World\u00a0Whiskey\u00a0Day has been marked\u00a0in\u00a0<\/span>places you might not\u00a0instantly associate with\u00a0whiskey\u00a0at all<\/span><\/b>, from Brazil to Bali\u00a0to Cambodia. One year, the celebration even reached Antarctica, where researchers at Australian Antarctic Division stations held\u00a0whiskey\u00a0tastings of their own \u2014 a long way to go for a dram\u00a0if you ask us, but honestly, fair enough.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

World\u00a0Whiskey\u00a0Day also has a close cousin,\u00a0<\/span>International Whiskey Day<\/span><\/b>, celebrated on 27 March. Born a bit earlier,\u00a0in 2008,\u00a0it was created\u00a0in\u00a0honour\u00a0of British whiskey writer Michael Jackson by a group of fellow writers and\u00a0is celebrated on his birthday. More famous\u00a0in Europe than\u00a0in the US,\u00a0it\u2019s\u00a0also celebrated with plenty of enthusiasm by whiskey lovers around the world.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

So, what made\u00a0whiskey\u00a0such a\u00a0centre\u00a0of attention even beyond\u00a0its traditional heartlands? Part of\u00a0it\u00a0is the sheer range of styles, from smoky Scotch to smooth\u00a0Irish whiskey to bold bourbon, and part of\u00a0it\u00a0is that\u00a0whiskey\u00a0culture has become far more global,\u00a0curious\u00a0and relaxed than the old clich\u00e9s suggest. Think less water droppers, more\u00a0<\/span>bourbon cocktails<\/span><\/b>. World\u00a0Whiskey\u00a0Day leans right\u00a0into that shift, with a simple\u00a0idea at\u00a0its core: all you need\u00a0is a bottle of\u00a0whiskey\u00a0(or whisky), however you enjoy\u00a0it.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Whiskey vs. whisky: a difference you should know<\/h2>\n

We\u2019ve\u00a0all heard the debate\u00a0sooner or later: whisky or whiskey?\u00a0The short answer\u00a0is simple. Scotland, Canada, and Japan usually spell\u00a0it whisky, while\u00a0Ireland and the United States usually go with whiskey. That tiny \u201ce\u201d has caused an\u00a0impressive amount of drama over the years \u2014 friendships tested, opinions launched, and probably at least one\u00a0portion\u00a0of haggis withheld. Jokes aside, people really do care about the\u00a0<\/span>whisky vs. whiskey<\/span><\/b>\u00a0difference, and not just because of spelling.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

In 2008, New York Times wine\u00a0critic Eric Asimov was flooded with angry emails from Scottish readers for spelling\u00a0it wrong. No one\u00a0is safe. And to look at the root of this whiskey-or-whisky difference, we need to go back to\u00a0its Gaelic origin: \u201cuisce\u00a0beatha\u201d, or \u201c<\/span>water of life<\/span><\/b>\u201d, a term shared across\u00a0Irish and Scottish traditions, even\u00a0if the Scottish Gaelic spelling\u00a0is usually rendered as \u201cuisge\u00a0beatha\u201d. Similar sound,\u00a0different way\u00a0of writing\u00a0the end of the modern word: an \u201cey\u201d for the\u00a0Irish (and later the Americans too, mostly because of\u00a0Irish\u00a0immigration\u00a0in the 18th and 19th centuries), and just a \u201cy\u201d for the Scots (plus pretty much everyone else). Little memory trick?\u00a0<\/span>Countries with an \u201ce\u201d\u00a0in the name\u00a0<\/span><\/b>tend to use the \u201ce\u201d,\u00a0while\u00a0<\/span>countries without one\u00a0<\/span><\/b>usually do not. That might save you one day. You\u2019re welcome.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\"Bourbon<\/span><\/p>\n

But are people getting\u00a0their feathers so ruffled over just an \u201ce\u201d? Not exactly. The difference between whiskey and whisky has plenty to do with\u00a0<\/span>the content of the bottle, not just the word on\u00a0its label<\/span><\/b>. To be officially called Scotch whisky, the spirit needs to be produced and matured\u00a0in Scotland, matured\u00a0in oak casks, and aged for at least three years. Plus, single malt Scotch whisky must be made from 100% malted barley at a single distillery.\u00a0Irish whiskey, on the other hand, usually uses little or no peat, so\u00a0there\u2019s\u00a0generally less\u00a0smokiness\u00a0in the glass.\u00a0It can be made with malted and\u00a0unmalted\u00a0barley, and while\u00a0it\u2019s\u00a0often triple distilled,\u00a0that\u2019s\u00a0not a hard rule across the board. Like Scotch whisky,\u00a0Irish whiskey must also be matured for a legal minimum of three years.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Now that you know enough about the difference an \u201ce\u201d can make,\u00a0let\u2019s\u00a0throw\u00a0in the whole alphabet. There are many more\u00a0<\/span>types of whiskey<\/span><\/b><\/a>\u00a0than you might\u00a0imagine, and that\u2019s exactly where things start to get\u00a0interesting. They can seem like a lot at first, but once you get a handle on the main whiskey categories, the whole bourbon-vs-rye-vs-scotch puzzle gets a lot less smoky \u2014 pun very much\u00a0intended.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n
